Ice melting.
Song birds chirping.
Daffodils poking out of the ground.
As we emerge from this long cold winter, I’m starting to see signs of spring!
The spring season is a perfect time to re-commit to our values & goals, especially if we have fallen into habits that limit our learning. Cultivating a growth mindset can help leaders believe change is possible and inspire positive practices towards personal and professional fulfillment. Having a growth mindset enables you to see ability as something that can develop through effort, strategy, and learning.
Here are five ways of building a growth mindset.
1. Reframe effort as part of learning
Leaders with a fixed mindset often see effort as a sign of weakness. A growth mindset recognizes effort as an essential part of improvement. When something feels difficult, remind yourself that challenge is often a signal that learning is happening.
2. Choose mastery over comfort
Instead of selecting goals that are easy to achieve, aim for challenges that stretch your abilities. Growth happens when we pursue mastery rather than simply trying to look successful.
3. Diagnose failure objectively
When things go wrong, it’s easy to blame yourself or blame circumstances. A growth mindset takes a more balanced approach by asking: Did I prepare enough? Did I use the right strategies? What can I try differently next time?
4. Try new strategies and ask for help
When progress stalls, avoid repeating the same approach or giving up. Experiment with new strategies, increase your effort, or seek advice from others.
5. Seek feedback
Feedback can feel uncomfortable, but it is one of the fastest ways to learn. Instead of avoiding it, ask for specific suggestions that can help you improve.
Cultivating a growth mindset doesn’t mean challenges disappear. It means viewing effort, setbacks, and feedback as essential parts of the learning process. Small shifts in how we approach these moments can lead to meaningful growth over time. Happy Spring!
