Congratulations! You’ve landed your new leadership role! But what do you do now?
Starting a new leadership role often comes with pressure to prove yourself quickly and get that first win. But one of the smartest things a recently hired leader can do is to build clarity and connection with their new boss.
Too often, new leaders assume expectations instead of discussing them directly. Strong working relationships are built on clear expectations, communication, and mutual understanding
Here are a few powerful questions newly hired leaders should consider asking their boss during their first few meetings
What is most important to you in this organization? What are the things you care most about? This question helps uncover what your supervisor values most and where they focus their attention and energy.
What are your expectations for my role for the first week? First month? First 90 days? First year? Clarity around expectations can help new leaders prioritize effectively and avoid guessing what success looks like.
What else do I need to know about you to work well with you? Every leader has different preferences, habits, and working styles. This question communicates humility and a desire to build a strong partnership.
These questions not only gather information, they demonstrate emotional intelligence, curiosity, and a commitment to partnership. Leaders who intentionally create alignment early are often better positioned to build trust, navigate uncertainty, and lead effectively over time. Best of luck with your new transition!
